Fair Oaks, California is such a beautiful part of the Greater Sacramento area. Founded back in 1844 as part of the Rancho San Juan Mexican land grant, Fair Oaks flourished and in 1895, Brevet Brigadier General Charles Henry Howard and James W. Wilson of the Howard-Wilson Publishing Company of Chicago acquired rights to promote Fair Oaks as the ideal citrus growing community. Fair Oaks grew rapidly n the 20th Century with the completion of the Fair Oaks Bridge and the railroad line. The Fair Oaks Fruit Company incorporated in 1902 and built a warehouse in Fair Oaks to export not only citrus, but also almonds and olives. Workers followed and by 1906 Fair Oaks had become a typical small town with it’s own post office, hotel, blacksmith shop, pharmacy, bank, newspaper, grocery stores and more! All located along Main Street. Visitors and residents can learn more about Fair Oaks history by visiting the Fair Oaks History Center which features many pictures of and artifacts from Fair Oaks dating from the early 1900’s. There is even a small collection of Maidu Indian artifacts too.
Don’t miss the fantastic Veterans Memorial Amphitheater located in the village where you can see fantastic outdoor theater productions at various times of the year. It is also home to the Fair Oaks Theater Festival that takes place every summer – taking advantage of the beautiful climate on offer here in this part of Northern California.
Fair Oak’s also has an active local Chamber of Commerce – representing dozens of local businesses as well as producing the Fair Oaks Fiesta and Car Show each May in Fair Oaks Village. Featuring beautiful classic cars from various eras. This popular event attracts the crowds every year.
For those animal lovers amongst you Fair Oaks is a wonderful dog friendly locale. It even hosts an annual Dog Walk event on the 1st Saturday in October.
For parents with kids, there are some excellent public schools in Fair Oaks which are part of the San Juan Unified School District. As well as is a good public library in Fair Oaks which is part of the Sacramento County Library system.
